THE CHARACTER OF A HERO:
EXECUTIVE ACTIONS’ SCOTT ROARKE
By Gary Grossman
As an author of international political thrillers, I suppose I can draw on a world of character types. The cold, calculating James Bond as Ian Fleming wrote him. The fish out of water turned hero Jack Ryan crafted by Tom Clancy. John le Carré’s driven Jonathan Pine in “The Night Manager.” Vince Flynn’s calculating Mitch Rapp. They’re all great, powerful figures who step into the scene and get the job done. I love them all.
But real investigative work takes a team or at least people talking with one another, muddling through the weeds, and sharing what they know.
I know because my father was in a law enforcement investigator in New York State.
I know because as a documentary TV and film producer, it also takes a producing team to uncover facts.
So when I began writing EXECUTIVE ACTIONS I wanted my hero to succeed through failure, learn from mistakes, know that he didn’t know everything, and reach out to people smarter than him, though he’s pretty darned smart.
Oh, and one more thing, he needed a smart woman by his side.
For Secret Service Agent Scott Roarke it became Boston attorney Katie Kessler.
Roarke, like many thriller heroes, first acts on a hunch. That hunch catapults him into a global plot with roots in the Cold War and a branch of the United States government. But he doesn’t manage to put the pieces together alone.
Just as I reached out to expert Constitutional attorneys, a Navy Commander, a State Department official, a retired Army intelligence officer, and FBI and forensics experts, Roarke also needs to rely on his team.
They include a CIA operative, two FBI agents, an Army captain, the advice of his boss a former Navy flier now the President of the United States, and the strength and determination of Katie Kessler.
The realization is not a sudden thought. Roarke’s backstory reveals a troubled history. He was raised by his father who was always on the road driving, arrested as a young teen for robbing a store, offered a chance to redeem himself by a beat cop, and given a career path through the U.S. Army.
He comes to his job having discovered the importance of teamwork and the necessity of listening to others as well as his own instincts. He can kill, but he is not a born killer. He is loyal to the president, but wonders what life would be like if he walked away from the Secret Service.
Scott Roarke is in his 30s – aren’t most of our thriller heroes – but he can act on a good idea from someone his junior or senior. He’s handsome, physically fit, sexy and sexual – of course. But Scott Roarke also loves saxophonist Dave Koz, a great Scotch, reading time and alone time.
He doesn’t jump right into a relationship with Katie. He worries about the dangers his career will bring her.
In other words, to me, he’s human; a realistic figure, a multi-faceted character, and man who comes to heroism not because he’s got special abilities, but because he rises to the occasion. That’s what makes him special.
Maybe he’s a good deal of my dad, though I usually only saw my father at his desk.
Maybe he’s a bit of who I wish I could be.
But I hope he’s a whole lot of what makes you want to read EXECUTIVE ACTIONS. I hope you’ll find him a personable, interesting and exciting guy you’d like to get to know…a man who, if you are in trouble, you’d want by your side. You’ll have to let me know.

In the midst of a heated presidential campaign, Secret Service Agent Scott Roarke gets an assignment that turns his world upside down. His investigation uncovers a plot so monstrous it can change the course of America’s future and world politics. Roarke discovers that presidency is about to fall into the hands of a hostile foreign power. The power play is so well-conceived that even the U.S. Constitution itself is a tool designed to guarantee the plot’s success. With the election clock ticking, Roarke and Boston attorney Katie Kessler race at breakneck speed to prevent the unthinkable. But they also know that it will take a miracle to stop the takeover from happening.
