Cat in The Flock, by Lisa Brunette
Cathedral (Cat) McCormick is a dream slipper. A rather unusual form of paranormal activity, wouldn’t you say? Slipping into someone else’s dream, feeling what they feel and think in vivid nightmares is not a comfortable situation. It’s a hereditary thing, thankfully. Cat’s grandmother has learned to use it throughout her lifetime.
Cat McCormick, Private Investigator
Now Cat knows it is time to embrace the gift, and heads to Seattle to learn from her grandmother. Even on the flight there, she encounters a little girl named Ruthie she knows needs help, but loses her at the airport. It comes as a shock to find the girl, with her mother, living in an early stage construction site a few days later.
Thus begins Cat’s career as a private investigator. Since the plan is for her to take over the PI business her grandmother owns, it’s time to put her to the test. Her dream slipping brings startling clues that have her traveling across country for more details. One man dead, another missing, and worst of all, the child and her mother are gone as well.
It is a terrific story, very entertaining. The dream slipping was well handled and just right. When writing any paranormal experience, making it fascinating and at the same time, realistic, takes a special talent.
It’s a solid mystery with a little romance thrown in besides. Conflict, pain, acceptance, and trust are a part of the story, occasionally sad, but always intriguing.
The book was provided to me as part of a book tour for Cat in The Flock, hosted by Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours. Listening to the audio version of the book was a pleasure. It was my first listen to Angel Clark as narrator, but I’ll be looking for more. She has just the right voice for Cat, did well distinguishing the voices of different characters, and read at an excellent pace. You can listen to a sample here. I’m sure you will enjoy the listen.
Either way, it is a well done, fast paced story that will keep you reading. Since this was the first of the series, it is good to know there is more to come. Book two is entitled Framed and Burning. It’s already in my cart. This is a series that should be interesting to follow. I would highly recommend it.

A sexy murder-mystery with a spiritual edge.
For most people, dreams are a way to escape reality. But for Cat McCormick, they’re a way to get closer to the truth. Cat can ‘slip’ into other people’s dreams.
After graduating college with a degree in criminal justice but little in the way of real-life experience, Cat moves from the Midwest to Seattle to apprentice with her Granny Grace, who shares the ability. Granny uses dreamslipping as a private investigator, and Cat plans to follow in her footsteps.
But forced to take work as a security guard, Cat discovers a mother and daughter on the run. Following the clues, she goes undercover in a Midwestern megachurch, where she finds redemption and goodwill amidst repression, hypocrisy, and murder.

Read an excerpt:
Lisa was born in Santa Rosa, California, but that was only home for a year. A so-called “military brat,” she lived in nine different houses and attended nine different schools by the time she was 14. Through all of the moves, her one constant was books. She read everything, from the entire Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden mystery series to her mother’s books by Daphne DuMaurier and Taylor Caldwell.
A widely published author, game writer, and journalist, Lisa has interviewed homeless women, the designer of the Batmobile, and a sex expert, to name just a few colorful characters. This experience, not to mention her own large, quirky family, led her to create some truly memorable characters in her Dreamslippers Series and other works, whether books or games.
Always a vivid dreamer, not to mention a wannabe psychic, Lisa feels perfectly at home slipping into suspects’ dreams, at least in her imagination. Her husband isn’t so sure she can’t pick up his dreams in real life, though.
With a hefty list of awards and publications to her name, Lisa now lives in a small town in Washington State, but who knows how long that will last…
